Ken was a proud member of the United States Marines. He signed up with parental consent at the age of 17 with friends during World War II (1945) and was honorably discharged after the war ended (1946). He later participated in the Korean Conflict from 1950 to 1952, with another honorable discharge and the rank of corporal.
1950 was an important year. He met and married Margaret and they went on their honeymoon with the $500 he won for a second place finish at the racetrack, his last official race but not the last time he ever drove fast.
He loved his family and had many adventures. He loved volunteering for Louisville’s raptor rehabilitation center, Masons and Kosair Temple. He was fascinated by all fast machines for travel, technology, and may have been the first in his group of friends to have a tv, color tv (in the late 1950’s) an email address, cable, and a riding mower. One of his many gifts was being a talented repairer of anything mechanical and he was great at figuring out the most efficient way of doing things.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Carter, and his parents, Elizabeth Cornell and William Carter. Kenneth is survived by his three children, Beverly Carter (Mark) Hoistad, Bonnie Carter Allison, and W. Stuart Carter. His grandchildren include Julie (Jeremie), Jillian, Erin (Mike), Eric, Ashley (Andrew), great-grandchildren Tyler (Julie), Logan, Kingston, Ryleigh, Luke, Carter, Grace, Evie, Elsie, Walt, Jeremie, Hannah, Donovan, and Cullen, and his first great-great grandchild, Graham.
A funeral service for Kenneth will be held Thursday, August 2, 2023, at 10:00 AM at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven Funeral Home (4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, Kentucky 40218). Following the funeral service will be a graveside service at 11:00 AM in Resthaven Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts be made to Louisville’s https://www.raptorrehab.org/
where Ken spent many happy hours caretaking and making “runs” to pick up wounded animals all over Kentucky.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.archlheadyresthaven.com for the Carter family.
