Walter H “Sonny” McMeans Jr., a Louisville native passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Friday, April 19, 2024 shortly after celebrating his 75th birthday. He was born to Walter H Sr and Dorothy McMeans on April 11, 1949. He loved to garden and grow vegetables which he would kindly share. Sonny joined the Louisville Fire Department at age 18 where he served his community for 25 years and retired as a Captain. He also served as a surveyor in the US Army. Sonny was the grandson of a carpenter who taught him much about building, he was a self-taught stone mason and a bit of a jack of all trades. He and Debbie spent countless days building their dream home with the help of family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Gilbert.
Left to cherish Sonny's memory is his loving wife of 54 years, Deborah L. McMeans; his son, Jason McMeans (Jill); his daughter, Jennifer Coyle (Chris); granddaughters, Elizabeth, Rachel, Jorgia, Jinger and Sophia; sisters, Nancy Pohl (Rodney), Carolyn Hendrix (Darwin); brother, Roy McMeans; several nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Jim Montgomery; sister- in-law, Cheryl Busch; and his close friend, George Busch.
Per Sonny's wishes, he is being cremated.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy should be directed to The Prostate Cancer Research Institute.
