She was born in Bottrop, Germany in 1929 to Augusta and Erich Konopka. Her family migrated to Canada in 1931 where she grew up in Alberta. She graduated from the Edmonton School of Finance. On a visit to Seattle, she met a young sailor from Kentucky, Wallace Dudley Baker. She followed the love of her life to Kentucky where she raised her 4 children while working in bookkeeping and accounting in the Louisville area. She enjoyed dancing with her friends, going to the lake, and a good glass of wine on her patio.
She was preceded in death by her husband Wallace Dudley Baker, her sister Helga Ferrill and brother Gunther Konopka. She is survived by her sisters Inga Anderson and Anne Wolfram, and her brother Werner Konopka, her children Karen Southard (Richard), Connie Cushnie (Nicholas), Kathy McGinnis (Jeffrey), and Wallace Baker.
Momsie had 15 grandchildren: Eric Southard, Jordan Bors, Katie McGinnis, Allie Bennett, Brittany Cushnie, Parker Cushnie, Lizzy Southard, Jared Baker, Ben McGinnis, Marc McGinnis, Zach Southard, Elleigh McGinnis, Bryce McGinnis, Jensen Baker, Kyla Baker, and several present and future great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 11 am to 2 pm prior to her funeral which is scheduled for May 17th, 2023, 2:00 pm at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven. Pastor Cook of Our Savior Lutheran will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate the life of Ruth “Momsie” Baker.
