He was a retired builder and independent contractor; he built complete homes, brick, concrete, stone, roofing and hanging doors and windows. Actually, anything but plumbing and electrical work. Millard served his country as an Air Force tail-gunner on a B-52 during World War II. He had a passion for horse racing, golf, football, basketball and ice cream. Millard, liked driving to Florida, first as a snow bird, then he built a duplex there for family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Aline Mattingly; his wife, Ruth Jarett; three brothers, Sam, Manuel and Elmer Mattingly; a sister, Elsie Clemons.
He is survived by two sons, Dale and Stephen Mattingly; brothers, Pat and Clarence Sr. Mattingly; a sister, Mary Fischer; his granddaughter, Chris Bryant (Jay); great-grandchildren, Jenna and Jacob; nephews and also pallbearers, Terry Mattingly (Barb), Clarence Jr. and Tim Mattingly, Eric and Allen Fischer and Terry Ringle.
His Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, July 2, 2011 at noon at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven Chapel, 4400 Bardstown Road with burial to follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. on Friday.
