October 9, 1942 - December 24, 2023
It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Martin Bergen Herbert, who was born in 1942 and departed from this world on December 24, 2023. Marty, a devoted husband, shared 57 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Geri. He was a loving father to his children Martin (Kira), Paul (Tanya), Kevin (Catina), Keri (Vernon), and Erin (Derek); grandchildren Sean (Jocelyn), Shelagh, Aidan, Megan, Lauren, Austin (Katie), Madalyn, Samatha, Wyatt, and Bergen; and two great-grandchildren Atlas and Audrey, who cherished him. He is also survived by his dearly loved sister, Kay Pedersen.
Throughout his remarkable life, Marty epitomized qualities that endeared him to all who knew him. He was a pillar of strength, kindness, and compassion, living selflessly and leaving an indelible mark on those he touched. Marty inspired countless friends and extended family with his steady demeanor and positive attitude, serving as a guiding light that encouraged others to be their best. His memory will endure through the lives he touched and the bonds he forged along his journey.
Marty began his career in 1961, working for Grace Lines as an accounting and purchasing clerk. His professional journey continued in the steam ship industry, where he contributed to industrial shipping companies, dealing with product movement and scheduling. Eventually, he joined the United Fruit Company, known for "Chiquita Banana," where he worked for over 20 years and held various responsibilities that led him from New York to New Orleans and later to Cincinnati, Ohio.
Upon retiring, Marty, together with his wife Geri, dedicated their time to working for nonprofits that assist seniors by managing active senior centers. He also became a Eucharistic Minister for Saint Timothy’s Church in Union, KY and was actively involved in their outreach program with various non-profit organizations. After relocating to Louisville, he continued his volunteer work at Epiphany Catholic Church, participating in outreach committees and serving as a Eucharistic Minister.
A lifelong fan of the NY Yankees and NY Giants, Marty's true passion was being the biggest fan of his family. Whether coaching his children's sports teams or cheering for his grandchildren, his presence at every soccer, basketball, softball, volleyball, cheerleading, or music event was marked by the loudest applause. Marty's favorite moments were those spent with family, and his legacy lies in the example he set for all who had the honor of knowing, learning from, and loving him.
Marty was welcomed into heaven by his parents, James and Mary, older brother Jimmy, and countless family and friends. In his favorite Christmas movie, a quote reminds us that "every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings." This Christmas, every bell that rang served as a tribute to our husband, Dad, Papa, and friend, Marty Herbert. May he rest in peace.
