Hi Kimberlee and Brennan. Can’t believe it has been a year since we lost your Kevin. I suspect you still think of him daily and cry for the loneliness caused by his absence. I hope as time goes on you are able to recapture life giving memories not of his illness and death but of the ways his gifts still live in and through you. And always will. He was a fine specimen of a human being. For his gifts to me and the rest of the hpc community I will always be grateful.  Specifically I am grateful for the firm and kind way he encouraged me when I was struggling to do the right thing at new Goshen Presbyterian church and he was my liaison to com, as well as new Goshen’s. Love and continuing prayers for you both as you mark this anniversary you never wanted to have to experience. Elisa 

Dearest Kim and Brennan, I just heard about Kevin's passing this evening when Kelly contacted me!  I am so very sorry!  I did not know and would have been there.  Please accept my deepest symathy and may his memory continue to be a blessing!

Mom, Andrew and I traveled with Kevin on the HPC trip to Guatemala in 1992 was it?  We had a great time I remember and he was curious, a serious and very compassionate questioner of all with whom we met. I thought he was much older than I was at the time.  Only now I understand he only had a couple of years on me. That was when we started to get to know him. And as we’ve done more of that over the years it has become clear he represents a real relational Christian. And those are rare. Very rare. We could not have had better mentors for our kids than Kevin and kimberlee. Nor could I have had better support on com while I was at new Goshen.  I know you snd Brennan have lost much more than the rest of us. But it is no small hole that has been left at hpc  and the larger church.  But of course grief is just a reflection of love’s depth.  And he, and you guys are loved by so many. Lots of love and peace to you both from the Peterworth Owen family!  

Kevin was the first person who ever made me question my faith, before I met him I was intent on remaining an atheist so I didn’t have to deal with the confusion of my religious beliefs. But there was something about Sunday School with Kevin that changed all of that, the techy slideshow transitions he was so proud of, the Krispy Kreme doughnuts, or the way his eyes lit up every time my hand skyrocketed when he asked a question. You never once doubted Kevin loved what he did and sharing that with others, he was an inspiration and mentor to every person in HPCs family and though I’ll miss seeing him every Sunday, I will never forget the lessons he taught me and the impact he left in my life.

Kevin was such a special person and touched so many lives.  He was an example of how to live life, how to lead, how to love others.  Sending lots of love to Kimberlee and Brennan...

I knew Kevin over many years as a friend and a colleague in ministry to Highland Presbyterian in countless ways.  In addition to his leadership roles, though, he did so many things quietly, behind-the-scenes.  I was particularly grateful for his stepping into a project that was close to my heart:  ensuring the presence of a labyrinth on the gym floor.  Under the youth pastor’s guidance, the youth had painted a labyrinth on the bare floor after a flood ruined the tiles.  When it came time to repair the damage, Kevin brought his drafting skills to bear and designed a pattern which could be permanently incorporated, along with the lines needed for using the basketball hoop!  Hard to imagine this world without his warm and generous spirit.  Love to Kimberlee and Brennen.

If I could describe Kevin in one word, it would be passionate. I met Kevin and Kimberlee when I was in high school at Highland Pres, and I could tell immediately that this couple was full of passion for the world around them. Kevin Burns lived his life not only in service of other people, but in service of supporting other people in their passions. I always felt secure coming to either Kevin or Kimberlee with tough questions and knowing that they would be there to support me or provide a laugh. This photo is from one of my summers spent at Montreat Conference in NC. Kevin and I spent every day walking down the hill from our lunch to the afternoon sessions--I would go to my small group and Kevin to lead his own small group. Kevin made a point to check in with me on how I was feeling and ask me for advice. I always felt seen and heard by Kevin, who treated me as an equal always. His grace meant so much to me during those years and was an important road map for my life.

After all these 30 Plus years I still think of Mr. Kevin Burns as I stand N the shower 4 a VERY VERY LONG TIME!  I dare say he was correct b/c I can’t tell U the problems that get solved while leaning my head against the wall with that hot running water showering down on me!  
You’ll B happy 2 know that HONESTLY, U were the absolute BEST TEACHER/MAMA of all the students with parents in any school …and U we’re across the hall.  Sending hugs

Kevin Burns, Architect

Kevin Burns walked into the College of Architecture and Planning at Ball State University in the fall of 1985 as a fully functioning adult. While the rest of us were messing around, staying up all night distractedly “working”, Kevin was carrying a briefcase and scheduling his time in 15-minute increments.  The drawings for his projects were always complete, even the ones where he decided to use a time-consuming, and difficult to endure stippling technique – think pointillism with a constant tapping noise.  Upon meeting him, I made fun of him with his southern Indiana “you all” not knowing that I’d end up in Louisville just a few years later, after graduation.  

Kevin was always a well-reasoned, confident designer.  His projects achieved the program with creativity and refinement, which was aggravating for those us stumbling, awkwardly trying to find our way. During discussions about ideas or critiques, occasionally, but infrequently, you’d make a comment and he’d take half a step back and his head would tilt, and you would get, “You know, I hadn’t thought of that.” He made us better designers because we wanted to try to make our projects better than his. 

Professionally, I had the good fortune to again share studio space with Kevin at the Louis and Henry Group.  Kevin continued to demonstrate his maturity and judgement in professional practice.  Working with Kevin and his eventual business partner, Amos Benjamin, was a crash course in all things ARCHITECTURE.  It was free-flowing, continuous dialog about design, detailing, code compliance, historical references, efficiency, real estate valuations, etc. It was all happening there, simultaneously.  I consider myself fortunate to have been around and involved in some of those discussions.  It helped make me the architect I am today.    

Although I haven’t seen Kevin in several years, I do know that he made a positive impact on the world.  Not bad for a life’s work.  


Kevin was a Rock.  I've known Kevin ever since I can remember.  Played in his yard with him as a child.  We went to the same schools. Although Kevin was a year  behind me in age and grade Kevin always seemed leap years ahead of me in maturity, charting his life path, and his Christian Walk.
Kevin was a wonderful person to confide in, always gave sound advice, and was positive and encouraging.
I remember the first time he talked to me about Kimberlee, I knew then they were destined to be life time partners.
Kevin will be missed by so many people but have no doubt today Kevin is rejoicing with Christ.

February 2019......Kevin helped the 5th graders serve communion in the 11:00 service.   

Kevin gave so generously of his time, talents,  knowledge,  and creativity.   He said "yes" to just about every job, task, and favor asked of him. 

 He was brilliant in so many areas and was usually the smartest person in a room,but never made others feel dumb.  He made so, so many friends through his many areas of interest and made such good use of the 24 hours in a day.  He accomplished so much in his life, but will be missed most for his amazing laugh, his humility,  creativity,  generosity,  brilliance,  and his deep faith.  He was a terrific role model , for young and old alike.  He taught lessons in living and in dying with integrity and strength.   We will miss you forever,  Kevin, and we carry huge pieces of you with us.

 Kevin's Jeep was frequently in the parking lot, and not just on Sundays! 
 Kevin was the chair, leader, teacher, member, and co-moderator of countless committees and classes over his 30 years at HPC.  

Kevin was a favorite, fun,  and reliable chaperone for overnights in the youth space!  He was so  incredibly generous with his time,  talents,  creativity,  and energy. 

Kevin enjoyed countless conversations with youth about faith, Star Wars, and everything in between in the HPC youth space. 

Kevin was a dedicated youth group advisor for 30 years , spending countless hours in the youth space now named the Kevin and Kimberlee Burns Center for Youth Ministry.  He relished in the laughs, questions, and conversations with the youth.  Kevin chaperoned countless youth group hangouts,  teaching hundreds (thousands?) of Middle School Sunday School classes, and positively impacted the lives of countless  young people over the years.   His legacy lives on in the hearts and lives of the many,  many youth and advisors who grew in their faith alongside Kevin .

Kevin spent endless hours of time laughing with, teaching,  playing with,  and impacting the youth of Highland Pres for 30 years.   Kevin was a dedicated youth group advisor and chaperoned or led countless youth group hangouts, Sunday School lessons,  and sleepovers.  His legacy lives on in the lives he deeply impacted over his many years of dedication. 

Kevin was a very special person -  one whose wisdom, biblical knowledge, theological insights, group leadership always amazed those who were lucky enough to share time with him. We are forever thankful of his never-ending loving support of our HPC youth. 

I think I got to know Kevin (and Kimberlee) playing kickball for the Highland Pres team, but I associate them with the evenings out at Molly Malone’s that Christine organized a year or two later. Kevin was my kids’ favorite Sunday school teacher, and his presence on the PNC was one thing that gave me hope for the future at HPC after so much went wrong. His loss will be felt in many ways. 

Kevin has truly been such a blessing to both Josh and I in more ways than we could ever imagine over the last several years of knowing him!  I will forever treasure the endless memories chaperoning youth trips and Sunday night youth group with him, being in his small group at Montreat, going on Tribe adventures with him, and going to him for career advice and to talk about the latest jobs we were both working on.  His commitment to the church, to the youth of the church, to his career, and to his family and friends is such an inspiration and we will miss him endlessly.  Heaven truly gained another Saint and the world will never be the same without his loving presence.  Sending our love and prayers to Kimberlee and Brennen and the entire Burns Family ❤️ 

So sorry to hear this. I loved sitting next to Kevin in Mr. Issac's math class. Sending love and  prayers. 

Kevin was and is an inspiration for all of us that knew him - determined, brilliant, assuredly capable, witty, and generous in every way. He lived life the way it should be - all in, and with no compromises. Kimberlee and Brennen, and the rest of the family, heartfelt condolences for your loss. The grief you feel is so deep because the depth and breath of your life together was so rich and immense. He will be missed dearly. 

From the moment we met you, we knew you were one of the good guys, Kevin. There are few people in the world as patient, as giving and as sacrificing as you. You have shared your love, knowledge, humor and attention with so many. Especially guiding young people in their faith journey in a time that was so difficult. We will always carry that spark and a piece of you in our hearts, because you truly changed our lives.  

If there is anyone who gets to hear, “Well done, good and faithful servant,” it is Kevin Burns.
Out of all of the church leaders who have spent time with my daughters, Kevin is at the top of the list of people who shaped them into who they are. He loved my daughters and taught them about God in the way he lived his life more than anything else.
He was patient, brilliant, kind, one of the best listeners you would ever meet, and he put other people first. Kevin helped the youth bridge a very difficult year at Highland. More than that, he showed them what it means to be part of a larger community. 
There will be a million things I will think of in the coming years that I want to tell Kevin. And every time I think of something I want to text him, it will break my heart all over again that he’s not here.
He was a wonderful friend. We shared many a laugh, and he was so wise. I will miss him every single day.
In life and in death, we belong to God.
