James “Jim” Franklin Yonts, age 87, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, November 14, 2012. He was a 1942 1/2 graduate of Louisville Male High School, attended Georgetown College and the University of Louisville, and received his Juris Doctorate from U of L in 1955. He was a man of integrity and faith, and his life was one of service. His education was interrupted twice by stints in the military serving his country. He served in the Army Air Corps, U. S. Air Force, and retired as a major from the Kentucky Air National Guard. He served the people of his city and state through his employment with the City of Louisville Health Department and the Kentucky Commission for Handicapped Children. For many years he was the Director for Administrative Services for the Commission. He retired in 1987 after serving the children of Kentucky for more than 33 years, and afterward, he served in a volunteer capacity as a member of the Commission. He served his family by being a faithful and loving son, husband, father, and grandfather. He modeled sacrificial love as he faithfully cared for his wife Peg through the last years of her life. He served his Lord and Savior through his longtime, active membership at Christ Church United Methodist and the Pathfinders Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Tenure Club for state government retirees, Kappa Alpha Fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity, and was a Kentucky Colonel. He was a golfer and an avid U of L sports fan.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years Margaret Link “Peg” Yonts, and by his brother Edward Wilson Yonts. He is survived by his sons James W. Yonts (Gail) and Robert M. Yonts of Louisville, and by his granddaughters Amanda Eversole (Danny) of Louisville and Julie Woosley (Kevin) of Tuscaloosa, AL.
The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the wonderful caregivers from Jefferson Manor and from Helping Hands Companion Care for their tender and compassionate care of Mr. Yonts. Also, they wish to thank the many friends who visited and sat with Mr. Yonts during his final months.
