Visitation will be held at Arch L. Heady Resthaven Funeral Home at 4400 Bardstown Rd, Louisville, KY 40218 with family visitation from 2:00pm to 3:00pm and public visitation from 3:00pm to 8:00pm on Sunday, December 22, 2024. Funeral service will be Monday December 23, 2024 at 2:00pm at Resthaven.
Born in Center, Ky. in Metcalfe County, he was the son on Della K. (Hiser) and Alvis A. Thompson. He married Pernie Lee Gooden on September 11, 1954. They had 4 children, Pamela Ann, Howard Reed, Jr., Jeffrey Benjamin and Christy Celene Thompson. He graduated from the Police Academy in 1956 and had a degree from the Southern Police Institute, University of Louisville.
He was an active member of St. Luke’s United Methodist church for 50 years and Audubon Park United Methodist church for 6 years. He was a generous man who loved spending time with his family, fishing with family and friends, and gardening. He was an avid University of Kentucky basketball fan, but also cheered for the University of Louisville (as long as they weren’t playing each other). He dedicated his life to serving his community where he retired as a police officer with Louisville Police Department with 35 years and 5 months of service; 20 of those years he worked as a Captain. He was a member of the Louisville Police Officers Association (LPOA), Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), and Commanding Officers Club. He was a 68 year mason and a Kosair Shriner. He was active in the Blue and Gray club at Kosair and volunteered at the Kosair Shrine Circus for many years. His home lodge was Hiseville Lodge #320 in Glasgow, Ky.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Della K. and Alvis A. Thompson, his wife of 50 years, Pernie Lee (Gooden) Thompson, his brother William F. Thompson, his sisters Marilee Thompson and Carol (Thomspon) Polley, and his sons Jeffrey B. and Howard “Reed” Thompson, Jr and his son-in-law, Peter J. Tedesco. He is survived by his daughters Pamela Ann Thompson Tedesco and Christy Celene Thompson Hall, son-in-law Robert “Bobby” Hall, 9 grandchildren,16 great grandchildren, and his dear friend Thelma Noble, all of whom loved him dearly.
