Donald Lee Miller

Don's family moved to Louisville, Kentucky shortly after, and he finished his studies in 1968 at the University of Lousville. After graduation, he enlisted in the US Army, and after basic training, he attended Officer Candidate School to be commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. Shortly before shipping out to Vietnam as an infantry officer, he volunteered to attend Engineer school in Ft. Belvoir, VA, where he met the love of his life, Mary. After less than a year, they were married, and he was deployed to Vietnam as the company commander of an Engineer company. After a year of service in Vietnam, he was awarded the Bronze star for his actions during that campaign.

After four years on active duty, he then served as an officer in the US Army Reserve for 24 years. During this time, he proudly served as a recruiter for the United States Military Academy at West Point, and encouraged young men and women to follow the path of service that he had found so rewarding. Prior to his retirement, he was awarded the Legion of Merit for his outstanding achievements and service to the Army.

For his civilian career, Don began working at a regional brokerage firm in Washington, DC in 1972. During that first year, they welcomed a son, Kevin. Later that year, they moved to Louisville, KY where Don was hired as a financial advisor for Merrill Lynch, where he would go on to work for the next 35 years. During this time, Mary and Don went on to welcome a daughter, Christy, and another son, Steven. Shortly after moving, they both joined Christ Church United Methodist, where they became long-time members who enjoyed the fellowship and faith of their Church community.

During their life together in Louisville, Don and Mary played competitive tennis, softball, and golf, while raising their three children. Don also enjoyed volunteering at local charities, and supporting charities and historical organizations throughout the world. Don shared his love for history with everyone within his community, and each day he brought history quizzes to his colleagues at the office. At home, he recorded nearly every episode of BookTV and Jeopardy, and collected over 1000 historical texts that he proudly shared with everyone who stopped by his house, to include family, friends, and contractors who dared to show an interest.

Don was a devoted husband to his wife of 54 years, Mary; a loving father to his three children, Kevin (Caroline), Christy, and Steven (Stephanie); and doting grandfather to 6 granchildren: Benjamin and Luke Miller, Isabelle and Abby Villella, and Madison and Christopher Swift. He is the eldest brother to Glenn Allen Miller (Nita) and Janet Miller Reed (William), and is also survived by a large and loving extended family.

A visitation and funeral will be held at Arch L. Heady funeral home at 7410 Westport Rd, Louisville, KY 40222. The visitation will be held on Sunday, November 3rd from 3pm-7pm, and the funeral service will be held on Monday, November 4th at 10am. Don will be buried with full military honors at the Fort Liberty Main Post Cemetery, in North Carolina.
