David was born on December 30, 1936 in Louisville, Kentucky to parents’ Russell & Katherine (Hughes) Meredith. The eldest child, David went on to serve his country with pride and honor in the United States Navy. Enlisting on April 15, 1957, he went into the service in Louisville, Kentucky. During his service to our nation, he served aboard the U.S.S. Rankin (AKA-103) and the U.S.S. Mississinewa (AO-59) during the Cuban Missile Crisis, Bay of Pigs and the Cold War with his brother, who was also on board. He was active in the Electronic Prepatory and Radar areas. His service also lead to him being able to travel the world with some notable places such as the Mediterranean and Italy. David had a gift for service, not to himself but to others. After his military service, he went on to serve in many community capacities and roles. He was very active with numerous churches throughout the area, growing up in the Farmdale Church of God which is now the New Covenant Church of God. He then went on to serve with the Christian Fellowship and then St. Anthony the Abbot Catholic Church in Axtel, Kentucky and the Cathedral of the Assumption. He also served with Jail and Prison Ministries in Jefferson County. He was a former camera man with Christian Television as well as a Volunteer with the Breckinridge Head Start Program where in 2004 he received the Outstanding Community Volunteer Award with Breckinridge County and in 2006, the Head Start Volunteer Award. He was a former Scout Leader with the Boy Scouts of America, member of the Knights of Columbus, Breckinridge County Ministerial Association and a founding member of the Good Samaritan Center of Breckinridge County and the American Legion. Later in life, David had a passion for gardening. He was also an avid coin and stamp collector. He loved to play scrabble and cards, but his most avid passion was collection Onyx Animals.
David is preceded in death by his parents’ Russell & Katherine (Hughes) Meredith; and first wife, Shirley Meredith.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Gloria Meredith; children, Rusty (Tami) Meredith, Noritta (Mike) Hemmerlein, Jennifer Leffel; 6 – grandchildren, 9 – great – grandchildren; siblings, Doris (Danny) Bowen, Roy (Margie) Meredith, Linda (Jerry) Marrow and Marty (Chris) Smith, plus a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his passing.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, July 16, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. in the Evergreen Dignity Chapel of the Evergreen Funeral Home with entombment following in the Chapel of the Apostles in the Evergreen Cemetery & Garden Mausoleums. Visitation will be held also on Friday, July 16, 2021 from 11:00 a.m. until the hour of service at 1:00 p.m.
