David Leigh Hughes

David Leigh Hughes, age 75, of Louisville, formerly of Portsmouth, Virginia passed peacefully on September 12, 2023. David was born on May 26, 1948 in Keokuk, Iowa to the late Hansel and Edith (Vaden) Hughes.

Mr. Hughes retired from the City of Norfolk after 35 years of service assisting patients through the Medicaid process.

David was a wildlife enthusiast and enjoyed being the Field Trip Chairman for the Cape Henry Audubon Society for 45 years. David and his friends started the first ecological student society at Old Dominion University. He worked to save acreage for what is now The Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. He also volunteered for Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, Norfolk Botanical Gardens and the Virginia Society of Ornithology.

He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Linda (Drexler) Hughes; sister, Kaye Hughes; sisters in law; nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews; his fur babies Rosie and Sprite. They will miss him terribly, especially his cooking and family photography.

Funeral service will be held on Sunday, September 24, 2023 at 11 am at Arch L Heady at Resthaven 4400 Bardstown Rd. Louisville, Kentucky 40218. Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2023 from 3 pm until 8 pm at the funeral home.
