Cunningham, Anita Carman age 88, passed peacefully on December 11, 2024 at her home in Acworth, GA surrounded by her loved ones. Born on June 28, 1936, in New Amsterdam, IN to Corda Franklin McCarty and Juanita Green McCarty. Following graduation from Shawnee High School in 1954, Carman worked for J.B. Webb Conveyer Company and Levy Brothers before she began her career at Brown-Forman Distillers Corporation in 1958 where she worked until her retirement in 1996. Carman met her future husband Rowland “Short” Cunningham at Sherrell’s Skating Rink in 1956. They married in 1961 and settled in Louisville where they raised their two daughters.
Carman went to UofL while working at Brown-Forman and earned an associate degree in 1992. She was a long-time member of Newburg Christian Church where she served as a Deacon, Elder, Sunday School Teacher, Treasurer and sang in the Choir. She was involved in numerous activities at church and was a fierce prayer warrior. Carman was famous for her Peanut Brittle which she would make and give to family, friends and neighbors at Christmas time. Short and Carman took several cruises and trips after retirement and made many trips to Georgia to visit their girls and grandchildren. She was a devoted wife, mother, nana and friend.
Carman is survived by her daughters Michele Shimizu (Jeff) of Marietta, GA; Deanna Bishop (Tim) of White, GA; grandchildren Zack & Zane Shimizu and Carleigh & Christian Bishop all of GA; Marissa Vega Velez (Nedry) of Simpsonville, KY. Four great grandchildren and 3 great-great granddaughters all from Louisville, KY. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Maria McCarty and several nieces and nephews and a multitude of extended family and friends.
Preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers Denny McCarty, Jim McCarty, Olney McCarty and granddaughter Lynn Shimizu-Sison
Funeral services will be held at Evergreen Funeral Home, 4623 Preston Highway, Louisville, KY 40213. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 18th from 3pm-8pm. Funeral on Thursday, December 19th at Noon, officiated by: Rev. Dr. Michael Gatton. Final resting place, Evergreen Cemetery.
