The Rev. Chester Gerald Summerfield (Jerry) began a new phase of his Christian life on January 9, 2014 at the age of 78. He was a graduate of Campbellsville University, University of Louisville, and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
He was a Baptist minister having served Baptist churches at Elk Lick, Franklin Street, Clifton Heights, Lake Dreamland, Horse Cave, Fourth Avenue Baptist Church in Louisville, KY, for 29 years, and was currently the Minister of Pastoral care at Walnut Street Baptist.
During the same time, he was a school teacher, having taught at Noe Middle, Kammerer Middle, and Westport Middle Schools.
He created the Inner City tutoring program for the old Louisville Public School system. He received a letter of commendation from the President, and the Brother and Sisterhood Award.
He was also the The Director of the old Louisville Area Council of Churches, and was a member of A.G.O.G.A. Master Class where he co-taught with his wife, at Walnut Street Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Virginia Summerfield.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Helen Clark Summerfield, his son, David G. Summerfield (Christine), two grandchildren, Katherine and John Summerfield. His sisters, Barbara Austin (Ted) and Laura Durbin, and 7 nieces and nephews.
Funeral services to celebrate Jerry’s life will be held at 10:30 Tuesday morning in the Santuary of Walnut Street Baptist Church, 1101 S. Third Street, with entombment at Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will be held Monday, 10:30 to 7:00 pm in the Chapel at Walnut Street Baptist Church.
