Bertha Jean Shoemaker

Bertha Jean Shoemaker was born on June 2, 1949, in Valley Station. Her parents were Idell Eiler Hendricks and James Edward Hendricks. Bertha married Robert Wayne Shoemaker on May 13, 1967. She peacefully passed away on Tuesday, November 12, at the home she and Wayne shared in Brandenburg, Ky.

Bertha graduated from Valley High School in 1967 and the Graduate School of Banking at LSU in 1992. After 37 years at National City Bank, she retired as Vice President.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her infant son, Mark Wayne Shoemaker; Siblings – Lee Hendricks, Judy Rohmann, Helen Hollar, and Denea Childress; Best friend – Carole Booker

Bertha is survived by Wayne Shoemaker; her son, Fred (Jean) Shoemaker and her daughter, Rhonda (Joe) Maynard; Grandchildren – Brittany, Alex, Jacob, Sam, Lana, and Rosalee. Great-grandchildren – Emma, Blaise, Avary, and Alyvia; Lifelong friends – Marie Benitez, Jewel Lathrop, Donna Morton, and Linda Vincent

Mom was the ultimate hostess. She was happiest when surrounded by family and friends and enjoyed cooking for everyone. If she knew we had a favorite dish, she was sure to make it, even if it was just for one. Mom taught us to “look out for the left out” and all were welcome in our home for the holidays.

It is also an understatement to say that in playing cards and board games, she was very competitive, even with her grandkids! You had to earn a victory, especially in Scrabble. Mom had a playful, mischievous side, often instigating practical jokes. She didn’t like to dwell on anything negative for too long. Whenever Mom was around, there was always lots of fun and laughter.

Mom enjoyed the outdoors. The last couple of years, she often spoke of the joy she had in riding horses and water skiing. She learned to fish from her Daddy and shared this pastime with her grandchildren. She made sure they caught a fish, even if she had to sneakily find a floater and put it on their hook.

All who knew Mom heard about her grandbabies. She was a natural Nana and created a treasure of lifelong memories of time spent together with each one. Countless hugs and kisses were given, along with sleepovers, Nerf wars, playing “what’s in the dark”, and playing board games. They seldom, if ever, heard a “no” from Nana.

Mom was an immovable force. Those around could either get on board or get out of her way. Her love and devotion for family knew no bounds. She strove to be the best Mom, Nana, Daughter, and Sister. Everything Mom did, she did to the absolute best of her ability. She was the backbone of our family, and we all felt at ease knowing that Mom would know just how to navigate any difficulties or troubles that came our way. Though she is gone, the love she gave us remains, a cherished reminder of her presence in our lives. She will be greatly missed.

A visitation for Bertha will be held Tuesday, November 19, 2024, from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Advantage Funeral Home - Hardy Chapel, Louisville, KY. A funeral service will occur Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at 1:00 PM, Louisville, KY. A burial will occur Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at 2:00 PM, Louisville, KY.
