Growing up in Southern California with her two older sisters, Marjorie and Gara, Liz graduated from Redlands College with a degree in education and a teaching credential. Soon after, she married Barrie Blake, and they had two children, Brad and Barbara. As Barrie served as a Methodist minister, the family moved frequently, with Liz dedicating her time to teaching special education.
Later in life, Liz and her second husband, Lee Nelson, cherished their time in the mountains, particularly at Far Horizons, where Liz served on the board for many years.
During her retirement, Liz enjoyed extensive travel, both domestically and internationally, with her wife, Dorothy Rooney. In addition to their shared passion for travel, they were avid birders, actively participating in the Morro Bay Bird Festival and the Morro Coast Audubon Society.
Liz’s kind and open spirit drew many friends, and her home was always filled with love and laughter. She especially cherished time with her family, particularly her grandchildren, many of whom spent their summer breaks with her.
In her final year, a remarkable team of caregivers, orchestrated by Megan Talevich, allowed Liz to remain at home surrounded by those who loved her. The family is deeply grateful for their loving care and support, and would like to thank Megan, Alison, Lori, Mary, Maureen, Sirena, Tristan, Zara and all those at Central Coast Home Health and Hospice.
Liz is preceded in death by her ex-husband Barrie, husband Lee, wife Dorothy, sisters Marjorie and Gara, and daughter Barbara.
She is survived by her son, Brad (JoLynne) Blake, son-in-law, Randall Costa; grandchildren, Christan Luna, Sara Blake, Stephen (Desiree) Luna, Zachary Blake, Thomas Costa, and Elizabeth Costa; and great-grandson, Braeden Flores.
There will be a celebration of life on Saturday, January 18 at 1:00 p.m. at the Trinity Methodist church in Los Osos.
Donations in memory of Liz can be made to the Morro Coast Audubon Society, South Bay Seniors-People Helping People, or an organization of your choice.
