As the sun was setting over West Los Angeles on Friday, April 26, one of its longtime residents, a beloved mama and Oma passed from this earth into a Heavenly Realm. Cato "Toss" Janna Roos had survived the earlier death of her well-loved husband, Jan Nicolaas Roos (11-1991) and of her beloved son, Jan Peter Roos (1-2010). Toss was an active member of her Dutch Club, NAS (Netherlands American Society of SoCal), and a cheerful friend to many who had emigrated to the United States in the '40's and '50's to start a new life with new opportunities. She provided a warm and loving home for her family, and was an accomplished artist in sculpture and stained glass. Toss was an expert seamstress, designing and making many of her own clothes for special occasions, and knitting exquisite baby clothes for her grandchildren. Toss was an active person all her life and enjoyed ice skating and hiking. Along with her skating partner, she won an award in Santa Monica for a paired skating competition.
Toss is survived by her sister, Lida Wijdeveld and nephew Leopold Wijdeveld of Holland, her daughter-in-law Laurie Anne Roos, and grandchildren Jennifer Lauren Roos and Jan Michael Roos. She will be missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
A memorial for Cato will be provided Saturday, May 4th, 2013 at 2:00p.m. at Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park, at 1218 Glendon Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90024. (310) 474-1579. The Roos family requests that, in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the Lung Cancer Research Foundation
