Royce Gerard Stengele, age 95, of Kilgore, Texas passed away on April 21, 2024. He was born to Paul Thomas Stengel and Ethel (Cobb) Stengel in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He was a Mennonite passtor’s kid, who worked hard to uphold that reputation and had an 8 year older sister. Royce attended a technical high school where he learned the Tool and Die trade. He then after went to work at Bethlehem Steel.
On July 24, 1948 he married Erma Musselman and they welcomed two daughters Vickie and Donna. In August of 1960, they moved to Texas where Royce would attend LeTourneau College and continued one year later at East Texas State University (now TAMU at Commerce). He obtained a Bachelors Degree and his Masters from Texas A&M with some courses taken from The University of Texas (The rivalry wasn’t as bad back then!) He taught high school shop class for one year in 1965 in Plano, Texas. Afterwards he moved to Kilgore, Texas to teach Industrial Machine Shop at Kilgore College. He started his 10 year teaching career in 1966 before working for various tool-making companies. He took an early retirement to devote time to taking care of Erma during the remaining years of her life. After her death, he married Joy Cheshire and they shared 22 years until her death in December 2022. Royce lived with heart issues and dementia with the Edingers for 6 and a half years and was blessed with regular trips from Vickie Stengele Miller. He was always full-on into life, he loved making up stories for his girls and grandkids. He was a great joke teller, loved the Lord, sang hymns energetically and was gracious to all he met.
He is survived by his daughters Vickie and husband Butch Miller, and Donna and husband Jerome Edinger; one step-daughter Cheryl Procell; five grandchildren Cherri and Brian Bailey, Steve and Michelle Miller, Stephanie and Josh Kerr, Jennifer and Christian Bradford, Josh and Christina Edinger; and 12 great grandchildren Jackson Bailey, Cassie Bailey, Joseph Bailey, Makayla Kerr, James Kerr, Sydnee Miller, Brody Miller, Natali Edinger, Micah Edinger, Asher Bradford, Finn Bradford, and Greyson Bradford.
A graveside service will be held on Friday April 26, 2024 at 10:00 am at Lakeview Memorial Gardens in Longview, Texas.
