Glenda is survived and missed by her loving husband, Jim, of 26 years; and her children, Jeff and John, and stepchildren, Adam, Aaron and Mannie. She will forever be cherished and remembered by her 14 grandchildren: Alex, Brittany, Garrett, Izzy, Jake, Kailey, Landon, Lexi, Logan, Lorin, Samantha, Trinley, Tyler, and Vivan. Glenda had a love for small dogs and also leaves behind her beloved chihuahua, Penny. Glenda was predeceased in death by her father Oscar Etters and her mother Elva.
She was born October 13, 1946 in Frankfort, IL and grew up in the coal mining community of Freeburg, IL. She graduated from Freeburg Community High School. After high school she married David Hughes in 1966, giving birth to twin boys Jeff and John. The couple lived in Illinois for several years before moving to Hagerstown, MD in 1974 and divorcing in 1978.
In 1982, life took Glenda and her sons to Stuttgart, Germany for 3 years. Glenda enjoyed her time in Europe, traveling some, and making several life long friends. In 1985 Glenda returned to the US with a move to Atlanta, GA where she eventually met the love of her life, Jim Burton. They were married on July 4, 1996 and settled in San Antonio, TX.
During this time she took an active role in the lives of their grandchildren, speaking frequently of the sleepovers they would have, and the sporting events they participated in. Her and Jim made many friends and she enjoyed her most rewarding profession to the fullest, being a grandma.
Glenda loved people and was loved by all she met. Despite surviving two open heart surgeries and pancreatic cancer, she remained upbeat and embraced helping those around her. In San Antonio she could be found at the hospital cancer center helping to make wigs for cancer patients and teaching them how to feel like their best selves while battling cancer. Her legacy will carry on forever reminding us to face life’s challenges with a positive outlook and love for those around us.
There are no words that can express how grateful and blessed we are to the caregivers who have supported Glenda in the last few years with steadfast care and love and friendship.
