Bill was born May 25, 1923 at Shenandoah, Iowa to James Stuart Martin and Chloe Irene (Anderson) Martin. He grew up in Shenandoah and graduated second in his class in 1940 from Shanandoah High School. He earned a B.A. in Economics (1946) and a J. D. law degree, with Honors(1947) both from the University of Iowa.
He served his country during WWII as a member of the United States Army Air Corp from March 1944 to his honorable discharge in Sept. 1945. Bill served with the 490th Bomber Group as a B-17 pilot stationed in England.
In 1947 Bill married Marilyn Forbes and they moved to Portland, Oregon where he practiced law. He was a principal at Martin, Bischoff, Templeton and Ericsson. At his retirement in 1986 he was Senior Partner and head of the firm.
He was a member of the Iowa and Oregon Bar Associations. Serving in Oregon as Vice Chairman of the Bar Examiners, Chairman of the Procedure and Practice Committee and Representative for Legislative matters. He served as a Municipal Judge, and was active as a Little League coach, was an Elder and taught Sunday School at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church and Lake Oswego Presbyterian Church, volunteered for legal aide, was chosen "Boss of the Year" by the Portland Legal Secretaries Association and ran a ranch. Bill was also active in many community and civic organizations, including the Lake Oswego (Or.) Public Library Borad, the Board of Directors for the Portland East Moreland Hospital, and the Portland Schools for the City Board. In October of 1965 he traveled to Jackson, Mississippi where he spent a month as a volunteer with the President's Committee For Civil Rights representing African-Americans.
Bill and Marilyn had two children, Ann and Jim. On his birthday he would always take the neighborhood kids to the amusement park.
Following his divorce in 1978, Bill married Kathryn Fehr, they were married until her death in January 2001. They moved to Kona, Hawaii following his retirement. He was active on the Board of the Kona Salvation Army, the American Cancer Society-Kona Branch and the Kona Outdoor Circle Foundation. Bill also taught Business Law at the University of Hawaii-Hilo West, 1989-94.
Bill enjoyed his golden retriever dogs named Teddy and Bear, carpentry, gardening, tennis, swimming and traveling. Because of his health he moved to Longmont in Aug. 2000 to be near his daughter.
Bill is preceded in death by his sister Betty Jean VanArkeI. He is survived by his daughter Anne Hovick and husband Craig of Longmont, Co. son James Lowell Martin of Portland, Or. and three grandchildren Meggan, Lauren and Alex Hovick.
Private family services will be held. Cremation at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory. Memorial contributions may be made to the Longmont Public Library, contributions can be mailed in care of Ahlberg Funeral Chapel, 326 Terry St., Longmont, Colorado 80501
