Loren Ray Young walked into the waiting arms of Jesus on December 11, 2021 in Longmont, Colorado. Loren was born on January 21, 1943 in Holdrege, Nebraska to Lawrence Young and Faye (Lunberry) Young. He was the third of five children.
Loren grew up in Holdrege, graduating from Holdrege High School in 1961. During that time, he was active in football, basketball, track & field, choir, and theatre. He was in a production of South Pacific which he particularly enjoyed. He had the distinction of having perfect attendance from kindergarten through high school, for which he received a special award.
He joined the Navy later that year and was stationed in Long Beach, California. He served aboard the USS Frontier, sailing between Long Beach and Pearl Harbor until he was honorably discharged at the rank of E4 Electronics Mate Third Class Petty Officer in February of 1966.
Loren married his high school sweetheart Sharon Young on February 20, 1965 in Holdrege, Nebraska. After completing his service in the Navy, they moved to Denver, Colorado where he worked as a bell hop at the Brown Palace Hotel and in assembly at Samsonite. In October of 1966, they moved to Longmont where he began working at IBM in Boulder. He worked in various departments over his 32-year career, retiring from his position in the telecommunications department in 1998. He liked to stay busy and meet new people, and he continued to work in various part-time jobs after that he enjoyed.
Loren loved Jesus. He attended several Christian churches in the Longmont area over the years. He enjoyed helping others, and was always happy to lend a hand to family, friends, neighbors, and those in need. During the 1980s, he was a member of the Long’s Peak Chorus, a local barbershop chorus. He often brought his sons with him to practice, where they also enjoyed singing with the group.
Loren was a curious person. He enjoyed learning and trying new things. This led to a number of hobbies including woodworking, watching movies and Denver Bronco games, photography, experimenting with smoked meat recipes and flavors (ribs in particular), and gardening. He was particularly proud of his tomatoes and the huge zucchini he grew.
Always fun loving, Loren liked to listen and dance to classic upbeat 50s and 60s music. He was known for his smile and humor. He loved to make others laugh.
Loren is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Keith, and his sister Lorraine. He is survived by his wife Sharon of 56 years, sons Matthew and Jason, daughters-in-law Mariannie and Denise, granddaughters Angela, Ella, and Annika, brothers Doug (Bonnie) and Gary, many nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.
A memorial service to remember his life was held on December 21, 2021 at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel in Longmont, Colorado. The family has requested contributions honoring Loren be made to HOPE for Longmont through their website hopeforlongmont.org
