George William Stevens passed away August 21, 2023 in Longmont, CO. He was born February 15, 1933 to L.G. and Elaine Swoboda Stevens in Verdigre, Nebraska. He was joined by brothers David and Alan, and sister Lois Hill.
He is survived by a son, John William M. Stevens (April), and four grandchildren, Rachael Brandt, Duncan, Erin and Ian Stevens, two great-grandchildren Sora and Leo Stevens. His spouse of 45 years, Jo Ann E. Miner Stevens, daughter Lynne Brandt, grandson Steven Brandt and special friend Roberta Stine, all preceded him in death.
He lived in Nebraska, Iowa and Colorado where he retired in 1989. He graduated from Northwood High School in Iowa in 1951 and Iowa State University in 1956 with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, he was employed by IBM for 28 years.
George was registered 62 years with the Boy Scouts of America. While District Commissioner he was awarded District Award of Merit, Long's Peak Council Silver Beaver award, and St. George award for service to Catholic youth. In the 70's, he was appointed Coordinator for Faith Alive and Law Witness Missions, In that capacity he and his witness team conducted weekend retreats for various churches in the Rocky Mountain Area. He sang bass at St. Stephens Church choir for 51 years and served 15 years as a Eucharistic Ministers in the Catholic Church.
He received Amateur Radio License, W0ATA, in 1947. Initially, he constructed his own radio equipment. He was proficient in using the international Morse Code, in addition to voice communications, to visit with fellow amateurs around the world.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, September 29, 2023 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 323 Collyer St. Inurnment will follow at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, 1303 S. Bross St. A reception will follow the inurnment at St. Stephens.
