CAMPBELL, David Robert - David, born May 16, 1916 in Dunwich Tsp., Elgin County, passed away Tuesday, November 14, 2017. David was the second son of Robert and Jessie Campbell. He received his elementary education at SS #9, Dunwich and secondary at Dutton High School. He went on to the University of Western Ontario, graduating in Mathematics and Physics. In 1938-39 he attended the Ontario College of Education, Toronto for teacher training and taught mathematics at Dutton High School for the 1939-40 school year. In Sept. 1940, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force where he served as an Officer and Navigation Instructor until 1944 when he was posted overseas to RAF Squadron 356 as a navigator for the Schmoyer Liberator Crew. The crew performed long range bombing missions from Salbani (near Calcutta) and then from the Cocos Islands in the Indian Ocean. After the war, David went back to teaching High School Math and Physics at Glencoe (1946-50), Tillsonberg (1950-53), Beal Secondary School (1953-65). In 1965, he became a charter member of the new Althouse College, London, as professor in Mathematics Education until he retired in 1985. Predeceased by his wife, Charlotte, in 1998, after a long struggle with Diabetes and Multiple Sclerosis, and daughter, Jessica in 2000, in an automobile accident, he is survived by sons Robert (Robbie) and Mackenzie (Mac), 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. A Remembrance Service will be held at Needham Funeral Home, 520 Dundas St., London on Wednesday, November 22 at 1:00 pm followed by a reception.
