Dorothy Hand, age 89, entered Heaven on September 27, 2024. She was born in Greensburg, PA, and was a three-pound preemie. Her parents were told they would not be taking her home, God had different plans.
She was the loving wife of the late Glenn A. Hand, Sr. They would have celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary on June 10, 2024.
She was the loving mother of Debbie Symons (late Doug), Glenn A. Hand, Jr. (Christine), and Sandy Bloom (Randy).
She was adored by her grandchildren, Ryan Bloom (Moriah), Michael Symons (Heather), Katie Mathes (Kyle), Kerri Barton (Neil), Jenny Criel (Ben), Emily Eichar (Scott), Erik Hand (fiancé Kelly).
She especially loved her seventeen great-grandchildren and doted on them as often as she could, remembering each birthday and spending too much on them at Christmas.
She was the loving sister of Walter Michael Grushesky (Sandy). She is also survived by nieces, great-nieces, nephews, and great-nephews whom she loved.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Dorothy Grushesky, her sister, Eleanor Petro, and her son-in-law, Doug Symons.
Dorothy was a full-time homemaker until she went to work with a friend at the McDonald’s on Plymouth Rd. She quickly became the “Matriarch” of Breakfast Managers until she retired after 17 years of service. The friendships made there lasted for years after retirement; young people who worked for her would thank her for encouraging them to do good work years later.
She and Glenn asked the Lord into their lives while in their early thirties and lived faithfully for Him the rest of their days. “Backyard fence” friends invited their family to church and the rest is history. They both served the Lord at Temple Baptist/Northridge Church from that time until the Lord took them home. Dorothy enjoyed teaching children at church and helping at the attendance desk for her Adult Bible Study Class.
She loved her grandchildren and being a Nana. She always had time to play with them when they were young. She loved having her growing family over for special dinners many times throughout the year; especially at Christmas.
She was excited to become a great-nana and treasured the times she spent with her great-grandchildren.
Dorothy and Glenn enjoyed taking road trips whether by themselves or with friends.
We thank the Lord for Dorothy and the life He gave her.
A visitation for Dorothy will be held Thursday, October 3, from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Harry J Will Funeral Home, 37000 W. Six Mile Road, Livonia, Michigan 48152. Friends and family will continue to gather at the funeral home Friday, October 4, from 10:30am until the funeral service begins at 11:00am. A livestream of the service will be available.
