Mr. Aboff was a former High School scoring champion who set the Union County scoring record of 1740 points over just a 3 year career from 1963-1965 for the Jewish Educational Center of Elizabeth.
Widely regarded as one of the best Jewish basketball players of his time in the northeast, Ray’s greatest achievement was scoring 62 points against Rutgers Prep in 1964 in a JEC victory, which was a County record at that time, and regarded as the top JEC victory in its history.
Ray was coached by his father, Jake Aboff, former star center at Thomas Jefferson High School, who led the team to the State Championship in 1938, and a member of the Elizabeth Sports Hall of Fame.
Ray went on to star in college for Yeshiva University before his career was cut short by mononucleosis his senior year.
Ray is survived by his 3 children Jason, Jeffrey, and Dr. Alissa Aboff, his grandson, Mateo, and his brothers Gary, Mickey, and sister Reena Aboff.
