Dr. Julian Orleans

Julian Orleans of Maplewood, New Jersey, formerly of Livingston, N.J. died on April 1, 2022, at the age of 96. The funeral will be on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, at 11 a.m., Temple Beth Shalom, 193 E Mt Pleasant Ave, Livingston, NJ 07039. Interment to follow at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge, N.J.

He was born on November 28, 1925, son of the late Ilo and Friede Orleans of Vassar Avenue in Newark, N.J.

Julian volunteered to join the United States Army in 1943 at age 17, and served for three years in the infantry, artillery, and the medical corps.

Julian attended Maple Avenue School, Weequahic High School, Columbia College and Medical School, and Mount Sinai Hospital, earning a medical degree. As a pediatrician in Livingston, he treated several generations of children from 1954 to 2004, and was on staff at St. Barnabas Medical Center starting in 1958, serving several years as Chief of Pediatrics.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Judith Wahler, and his wife, Marian Rubinow Orleans, in 2008.

Julian and Marian were married in 1953 and had five children. The family lived at 212 West Hobart Gap Road, Livingston, N.J., where Julian spent many hours tending the garden and lawns, adding flowers and fixtures from his childhood home.

Since 1954, he was a member of Temple Beth Shalom, Livingston, served on the Board of Trustees for 40 years and as president for two years. He studied Talmud, served as Historian/Archivist, and chaired the landscape committee.

He was a frequent traveler, enjoying annual family trips to Beach Haven, N.J., around the U.S. and overseas, to France, China, Turkey, Vietnam and Spain, Israel, Denmark, Holland, Belgium, Iceland, and Norway.

An ardent bicyclist since 1980, Julian biked the U.S. from coast to coast in 7 weeks at age 67. Each year from age 60 to 85, he biked his age in a single trip, either in miles or kilometers. Many of his trips abroad including cycling through a country, including an excursion from Jerusalem to Eilat, Israel when 81 years old.

He served as a volunteer for three weeks in Israel during the Persian Gulf War in 1991. He was also a prestigious blood donor, donating 310 units of whole blood and platelets over his lifetime. He was an enthusiastic photographer, bridge player, and enjoyed tracing his family tree.

He is survived by his children, Daniel Orleans (Janice), Alison Conte (David), Bill Orleans, Ellen Orleans, and Ilo Orleans (Lou); grandchildren, Amelia (Chris), Max, (Katie), Lou (Kelly), Leah, Megan (Andrew), and Kate (Marianna) and great-grandchildren, Aiden, Sam, Culver, Violet, and Grace, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and cousins.
