Barbara L. Zinbarg, 85, of Short Hills, passed away peacefully on May 18 following a brief illness.
She was the daughter of Beatrice and David Scheffres of New York City, and was predeceased by her brother Robert.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Edward, and 2 daughters – Elizabeth (David Nover) and Allison (David Nagelberg). Barbara had 5 grandchildren and lovingly welcomed their partners into her family over the past few years. She was the loving aunt of Scott Topping (Brenda) and Linda Topping Jacobson (Howard).
Barbara’s undergraduate and graduate degrees were from Brooklyn College. She loved being a teacher for many decades, beginning in the NYC public schools and ending at Golda Och Academy in West Orange.
Barbara was the consummate community volunteer. She was a Past Vice President of Oheb Shalom in South Orange and a Vice President of the Women’s Philanthropy group at Jewish Federation of MetroWest, NJ. She was a board member of the William Davidson Graduate School of Jewish Education at the Jewish Theological Seminary.
Most recently she found an additional unique purpose in her life as a volunteer with the children at LifeTown, a project of Friendship Circle. LifeTown’s goal is to “help the world become a place where people of special abilities are seen for the unique skills they have and the beauty they bring to the world”. The family has requested that donations in Barbara’s memory be sent to LifeTown.
