He was born February 22, 1941, in Kankakee, Illinois to John Phillip Mathews and Dorothy Ann Fortin Mathews. He grew up in Bradley, Illinois, attended Bishop McNamara High School, and earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Eastern Illinois University. He began his career in the accounting department of Kroehler Manufacturing Company in Kankakee then accepted a position as systems engineer at IBM in Hammond, Indiana. He retired from IBM as regional marketing manager based in Chicago after being employed with IBM for 34 years.
Survivors are his wife, Jo Ann, sons Steven J. (Meghan) who live in Herndon, Virginia, Jeffrey J. (Anne), who live in San Francisco, three grandsons, Jackson, Jefferson, and Harrison, one granddaughter, Scarlett Anne, and a large extended family of cousins, nieces, and nephews. His brother, Jack, preceded him in death in 2010.
Before Steve and Jo Ann moved from Flossmoor, Illinois to Ocean Isle Beach in 2000, Steve coached his sons in the Flossmoor Little League for 13 years and was president of the League for several years. He was on the board of School District 233 (Homewood-Flossmoor Community High School) and was an usher at Infant Jesus of Prague Catholic Church in Flossmoor.
Steve enjoyed golfing, was a member of Elks Lodge 2679 in Calabash, and volunteered for 10 years in the food pantry at St. Brendan Catholic Church in Shallotte. A Mass of Christian burial will be at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 1108 8th Avenue North, North Myrtle Beach at 11 a.m. on July 20, 2024.
