With profound sadness and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Richard J. Burke, Jr. on October 21, 2021.
Dick was born in Rutland, Vermont on July 9th 1940. He lived in Vermont for most of his life until retiring to South Carolina in 2010.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Evie; his devoted son, Jim; daughter-in-law, Bernadette; and his adoring grandchildren Jason and Caitlin. He is also survived by his sister, Judith B. Haley and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Richard and Gertrude (Fecteau) Burke and his brother, Tom.
Dick was an Educator and Guidance Director for more than 40 years at Vergennes Union High School, admired by faculty, parents and students alike. He worked tirelessly to ensure the success of every student, whether they were college bound or choosing an alternate career path. He guided each student through the correct course for them to achieve their full potential. He cherished his Guidance Director position, and in that capacity, he appeared on Oprah discussing alternate ways to help students further their education.
Dick was extremely involved in politics and was elected City Councilman from 1968 to 1972 and Mayor of Vergennes from 1972 to 1989. Dick was chosen to represent Vermont at the Republican National Convention in 1972. He held several leadership positions for the Republican Party and was listed in Who’s Who in American Politics for many years. He was a proud member of the Rotary Club, honorary member of the American Legion and earned the American Legion Citizen of the Year award and countless other awards for his service and dedication to the organization.
Dick was a proud, honest and gentle man with strong sense of community and country. His greatest joys were his family. He was a major presence in their lives and enjoyed every activity the kids participated in and took special pride in their accomplishments. Dick was a strong, kind, loving father and grandfather. He lived his whole life with strength of character and contentment. Dick passed away peacefully with his beloved wife, Evie, and son, Jim, by his side. He will be greatly missed by friends and family.
