After many months of declining health, Frankie J. Vereen was called to his heavenly home at the age of 79 on Saturday, February 13th, 2021. Frankie was born in Wampee, SC on May 20, 1941, to father Ruthel Hartford Vereen and mother Laureta Jones Vereen.
Frankie often referred to himself as ‘a dumb ole country boy’, but those who knew him knew this was far from the truth. In 1962, he and his wife Linda acquired a grocery store from Linda’s parents, which became Vereen’s Thriftway. They soon started another business selling farm supplies to the local farmers, Vereen's Farm Store. Frankie farmed tobacco, soybeans and corn along with running the businesses. When local farming became a thing of the past, Frankie took advantage of Myrtle Beach becoming the golf capital of the world to keep his business going. He turned his business plan to focus on selling fertilizers to golf courses and added any other supplies that they needed. His business evolved into Vereen’s Turf Products, which continues today. In 1993, Linda and he purchased a blending plant in Kingstree, SC. This allowed them to custom blend any product to meet the customer needs. It became Vereen's Fertilizers which supplies Vereen's Turf Products and its own customers. He also added a golf course, The Valley at Eastport in Little River, SC in 2008. Even in his retirement years, he pursued business again with Wampee Equipment.
Frankie was also known for his gift of nicknames. He gave out many.
He is survived by his wife Linda Vereen; children Joey (Michelle) Vereen; Andee (Jeff) DiCola; Mindy (James) Jackson; grandchildren Nicholas DiCola; Avery Vereen; Matthew DiCola; and Ava Jackson; many cousins, nieces and nephews; and special caregiver, Texter Vaught. Frankie was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers R.H. Vereen, Jr; Max Lee Vereen; and his sisters Albertine Livingston; Doris McDaniel; and Cathy Spivey.
Frankie had a heart of gold as many would attest to. As a lifelong member of Wampee Baptist Church, he demonstrated his faith in the Lord Jesus in the way he lived his life. Visitation begins at 2:00pm on February 21, 2021, with the funeral service at 3:00pm at Wampee Baptist Church, in Longs, SC. You are invited to join the service at the Wampee Baptist Church Facebook page at:
