Donald Ray Ussery, 90, a lifelong resident of Archdale, North Carolina passed away on Tuesday July 17, 2024, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina with his family by his side. He was born on March 26,1934 in Marietta, Georgia, to the late Gene Ussery and Tommie Gray Ussery.
Donald was a loving son, husband, father, Granddad, brother, uncle, and friend. One June 15,1956 he married the love of his life, Emily Sanders Ussery. Donald was of the Baptist religion and strong in his faith. He served our country as part of the US Air Force after high school, where he was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska. As a faithful and dedicated employee, he worked in the printing industry for 60 years, until he retired at age 84 to become a caregiver for Emily. During his time at EDM, there were many co-workers, customers and vendors that he built relationships with, who became lifelong friends to him and his family.
In his free time, he enjoyed golfing, going to the beach, bowling in his younger years, watching Walker Texas Ranger, spending time with his family, and taking care of “his honey”. He found great honor in being called Granddad by his only grandchild, and later his great grandchildren.
He was known for his great personality, being a jokester, loving and always caring for his family, and for his head full of curly hair his entire life.
He is survived by his son Mike Ussery (Stephanie), granddaughter Jamie Asbill (David), great grandchildren Jerzie and Cooper Asbill, sisters Judy Lockhart and Sondra Auman and sister-in-law Jeanette Wilkes.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Emily Ussery, brother’s Bobby and Buddy Ussery, sister’s Mary Ellen Sumner and Jackie Ussery, and brother-in-law and close friend J.B. Lockhart.
A service in memory of both Donald and Emily Ussery will be held on a later date at Advantage Funeral Home in Archdale, NC.
The family would like to say a special thank you to Embrace Hospice House and Embrace Hospice Care of Myrtle Beach for the care they gave him over the last few weeks , as well as everyone who helped love and care for him during his declining health.
