It is with great sorrow to announce the unexpected passing of William “Bullet Bill” Purpura, age 69 of Willowbrook. Bill worked for Gully Transportation as an account manager for 30 years. Bill is the beloved husband of the late Jane Purpura. He is survived by his daughter Patti Purpura and his grand-dog, Hawkeye. He is the late son of Julia and Frank Purpura. Loving brother of the late Frank “Buddy” Purpura. Bill is the fond uncle and great-uncle of many nieces and nephews.
Bill was an avid sports fan with his allegiances lying with the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Browns. You could also find him cheering on the horses at the local OTB.
Bill was happiest when he was on a baseball diamond. In 1971 his Liberty League Division team, The Greyhounds, representing Bessemer Park, won the Chicago city championship. He also played baseball for 4 years at Mendel Catholic.
Bill spent countless hours coaching softball, whether it was in the Calumet City Park District women’s softball league, Darien Youth Club, or for the Downers Grove Outlaws. He was known as the supportive coach, always offering a high five or words of encouragement. He was beloved by all of his players.
Bill and Jane were married for 33 wonderful years. Some of their fondest memories included going to Summerfest in Milwaukee and tailgating with Patti at Iowa Hawkeye football games.
Bill will be missed by all who interacted with him.
