Charles J. Sener, (Chuck/Jack) 103 of Lisle, Illinois. Beloved husband of 67 years to the late Helen Jane (Whitehead). Father to Stephen (Sherri), Thomas (Nanci), Joseph (Linda), Timothy (Juanita), and Martin (Lynn). Proud grandfather of Christina (Christian), Matthew (Cara), Michael, Kathryn (Keenan), James (Krista), Joseph (Eris), Alexander (Emily), Michelle, and Daniel. Great grandfather of Caroline, Kallyn, Sophie, Charlotte, and Kamden. Dear brother of the late William Henry Sener and Frederick Charles Sener. Uncle to Marion, William, John, and Charles and many “cousins” – the McGarigles and Flemings.
Chuck served with distinction in World War II in the United States Army, serving in the Pacific Theater. He worked for “the phone factory” (Illinois Bell and AT&T) for 47 years before and after his military service and retired in 1985 as Vice President, Education and Training. He then formed Professional Communication Consultants in Lisle, Illinois. He was active as a Patriot in the Illinois Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, and was its State President. Chuck was a long-time usher at St. Procopius Abbey in Lisle, Illinois, and was an active resident of Villa St. Benedict for the past 5 years. He loved playing cards and even won occasionally.
Chuck attended Fort Dearborn elementary school, graduated from Morgan Park High School, and received his B.S. in Industrial Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1960. He has been a member of the American Society for Engineering (ASE) since 1971, a past executive director of the National Engineering Consortium, a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and served on the President’s Advisory Council of Illinois Benedictine college from 1975 to 1994. In 1985 he was presented the IEEE Educational Activities Board’s ‘Meritorious Achievement Award in Continuing Education Activities.
Chuck was a charter member of the National Accreditation Board for the Institute of Nuclear Power Operators (INPO), a member of the Engineering Education Committee of the United States Telephone Association and a director of the Council for Continuing Education.
In his earlier years he was a great HO gauge train enthusiast and often entertained guests with the operation of his layout, which took up a significant portion of his basement. He was always available for a campout when his sons were in Scouting and more than willing to ferry his sons to and from basketball games at St Ignatius College Prep, where several of his sons and grandchildren attended. Chuck was an active member of Sir Hugo’s Companions, a group of avid Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts.
In later years, Chuck was a very loving and involved grandfather, and great grandfather. His grandkids have fond memories of playing with him in the basement of his home, which housed not only his huge model train yard but also a pool table, ping pong table, dart board, putting green, and various other treasures to keep them all entertained.
Chuck will be remembered as an incredibly smart, loving, and dedicated family man, and the person that so many of his sons, their wives, and his grand- and great-grandchildren turned to for advice and wisdom. His quick wit, hearty chuckle, dedication to his faith, and love of extraordinarily dry gin martinis will never be forgotten.
Friends and family will gather for a visitation for Charles that will be held January 3rd, 2023 from 4:00 until 8:00 pm at Blake-Lamb Funeral Home, 5015 Lincoln Avenue, Lisle, Illinois. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on January 4th, 2023 at 11:00 am at the Chapel of Villa St. Benedict, 1920 Maple Avenue, Lisle, Illinois. Interment will be at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois.
