Celebration of his life will be observed on October 8th at the Woodridge United Methodist Church in Woodridge Illinois, with Danita Anderson officiating.
Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm concluding with a memorial service at 2:30 pm.
Alfred was born on April 16, 1925 in Hays, Kansas, to Robert E. and Anna E. (Bell) Getty, who were residing at the Kansas State Experimental Agriculture Station. The family moved to rural Norton County, Kansas, where the one room schoolhouse was collocated on the family farm. In 1943, Alfred enlisted in the Army and served as a Combat Engineer (Communications) in the European Theater until 1946. Upon discharge, Alfred returned to Kansas State University, where he met his lifelong love and companion, Velma (nee Weaver), of Larned, Kansas, and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (EE). The couple married and moved to Champaign, Illinois, where he earned his Master’s degree in EE from the University of Illinois. Alfred first worked for Public Service in Joliet while living in Elwood, Illinois. Commonwealth Edison bought Public Service and Alfred’s work moved to Chicago and the family moved to Lisle. Alfred rose to Senior Engineer in Systems Planning and retired after 42 years.
Al was a founder and charter member of Faith Methodist Church of Lisle, and later a member of Woodridge United Methodist Church in Woodridge, Illinois.
Alfred is survived by his wife of 74 years Velma of Naperville, three children, Brenda Martinez of Westminster Colorado, Marc (Linda) Getty of Lisle, Illinois, Dale (Kathleen) Getty of Naperville, Illinois, ten grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
Alfred was preceded in death by his brother Leonard and his daughter Janet.
