John "Jack" DeFilippis, 90, of Keyport, NJ, formerly of Newark, Belleville and Brick, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2024 at home after a long illness. Born in Newark, NJ to Angelina (Straniero) and Achille DeFilippis, Jack led a life defined by dedication, service, and love for his family and community.
Jack earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from New York University, setting the foundation for a distinguished career. He held numerous influential positions, including Director of the Office of Employee Relations for the Governor of New Jersey, President of Jason Phillips Associates in Morristown, Assistant Chief Affirmative Action Officer for the New Jersey Department of the Treasury, Senior Vice President of Earnhardt, Owens, Pilsner, and Stratton, Director of Personnel and Chief Negotiator for the West Orange Board of Education, Director of Personnel and Labor Relations for Essex County College, Assistant Director of Personnel for the Newark Housing Authority, and a recruiter for the Newark Police Department. A proud veteran, Jack served in the United States Navy during the Korean War.
Jack’s personal passions were as vibrant as his professional achievements. He was an avid New York Yankees fan, an accomplished songwriter, and a lover of classic cars and animals. He played in organized softball leagues and found joy in the timeless music of Frankie Valli and Frank Sinatra. His Catholic faith remained a cornerstone of his life.
Jack’s enduring character was marked by honesty, generosity, determination, and a deep love for those around him. He was predeceased by his parents, Angelina and Achille, and his sister, Christine Halpin. He is survived by his beloved nieces, Tara Chodan (Anthony) and Ashley Alarcon, along with her sons, Blake and Wyatt Kemp, all of whom will cherish his memory.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Lucille’s Church in Newark, NJ, followed by interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover, NJ. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Jack’s name to veterans' associations or animal charities, reflecting the causes closest to his heart.

A funeral mass will be held at Saint Lucy's Church, 118 7th Ave, Newark, NJ 07104 at 10:30 AM, November 27th, 2024 followed by a committal service at Gate of of Heaven Cemetery, 225 Ridgedale Ave, East Hanover, NJ 07936.
