William (Bill) Duane Bush, 99, of Lincoln passed away Friday, October 30, 2015 at home. Born September 4, 1916 in rural Pawnee County to William Scott and Callie Leona (Youngs) Bush. His mother Callie died of influenza when he was very young. Bill’s youth was spent living and working on farms of relatives and with his father’s trucking business. He graduated from Lewiston High School in 1934. In Lewiston he met a young school teacher from Aurora, the love of his life Zelda June Ebert. He married Zelda on November 23, 1942. Bill served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater and was a participant in the Normandy invasion. He initially served in Nebraska’s 35th Infantry Division, 134th Regiment, 110th Medical Battalion. His unit joined Patton’s army toward the end of the war. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the American Defense Service Ribbon and 5 Battle Stars. After the war Bill worked for thirty years at the Veteran’s Administration facility in Lincoln where he retired. He was not idle for long and worked another thirteen years for the Nebraska Department of Roads before final retirement in the early 1980’s. Though Bill and Zelda had no children of their own, they remained active and interested in the lives of their many nieces and nephews and their families. Bill was a prolific letter writer and enjoyed receiving letters from his many correspondents. Bill was one of five children and Zelda was one of ten children. Bill is survived by brother and sister-in-law Darryl and Ina Jo Meyer of Albert Lea, MN, brother-in-law John Green of Aurora; his nieces Barbara Lynnette Hunt of Blair; Sandie Peroglio (Joe) of Reno, NV; Paula Hewen (John) of Aurora; Patricia Moeller of Richmond, VA; Judy Pearson of Lincoln; and many other nieces & nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews throughout the United States and beyond. Preceded in death by wife Zelda June (Ebert) Bush after 63 years together, brothers Laurence S. and Lynn E. Bush, sisters Beulah Rulla and Naida Kinghorn. Memorial Service at 3 PM, Friday, November 6, 2015 at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home & Cemetery. Bill’s ashes will be interred next to Zelda’s at gravesite following memorial service. No visitation.
