Carol Joy Krueger Schoenleber passed away on April 22, 2024 at the age of 93. She was born to Emma (nee Kuecker) and George Krueger on September 16, 1930 in Webster, South Dakota, the youngest of seven siblings. After her father’s death, she and her mother moved to Lincoln, Nebraska in 1942, where she graduated from Lincoln High School in 1948 and attended the University of Nebraska. She married Kenneth Reese Schoenleber in 1950 and they continued to reside in and around Lincoln during their life. Kenneth predeceased her in death in 2006, but she is survived by her four children, Barbara (Kay) (Dale Kuker), Steven (Susan nee Muzinski), Robert (Carol nee Gerbeling) and Thomas (Elizabeth nee Gerding). They in turn have eleven children and twenty-seven grandchildren.
Carol lived a full and happy life and centered her activities around her strong belief in God, her deep love of family and her rewarding work with the Nebraska State Probation system. She was employed there for thirty-one years and retired in 1998 after serving as both Deputy and State Probation Administrator for seventeen years. She was awarded several commendations during this time.
Carol was a member of the United Methodist Church all her life, attending Grace UMC-Lincoln until it’s merger with two other churches to become New Hope UMC. She had a great faith in God and a commitment of service to others, and demonstrated that by serving in many capacities with the church. She was on several boards and committees, sang in the choir, volunteered at Food Net for many years, and also was a member of United Methodist Women, Grace Quilters, and the church book club. From these groups she gained many strong friendships that she treasured all her life. She and Kenneth served as sponsors with Methodist Youth Fellowship during the years their four children were growing up. Later in life she also was recognized as a member of the Universal Life Church with a Credential of Ministry, and married her granddaughter and her fiancé in November 2022.
However, her pride and joy was her family and they were in her thoughts daily. When possible, she and Kenneth attended any activity that a child was involved in, including church, school, sports, music and drama, as they believed strongly in supporting all family members. They strove to instill strong values and work ethics in their children, and many side-business activities involved all six family members working closely together as they were growing up. Twice, Kenneth and Carol moved their family to aging family members’ homes in their last months to provide care and support, as well as opening their home to various family and friends that needed a place to stay and time to adjust to difficult situations. Family vacations often included Boy Scout troops, of which Kenneth was Scout Master and Carol, Den Mother. Other travels including visits to Singapore, Mexico, and Fiji. However, Carol often said that her favorite place to be was reading in her chair, and we all knew that she loved her recliner!
She was a strong Husker fan and supported the teams by attending local football and basketball games and later, watching TV and cheering them on with family and friends. After retirement, Carol focused on family activities and began taking Ollie (Osher Life Long Learning) classes at Southwest Community College. She tried scrapbooking but enjoyed the social interaction of group crops much more than the process of putting photos on paper! She was an avid reader and joined several book clubs. She liked to journal about each book after she read it. She sold the large family home and moved to a condominium for several years and then moved to Legacy Terrace, where she spent her last year surrounded by a great environment and wonderful staff.
She was a loving and spiritual human being with a great sense of humor, and we are so blessed to have had her in our lives for 93 years! She will be greatly missed.
A memorial service for Carol will be held Monday, May 6, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 6800 S 14th St, Lincoln, NE 68512. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Carol's honor can be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
