Born April 8, 1935, in Hebron, Nebraska, she was the daughter of Lowell Calhoun and Maxine (Haney) Dettman. She spent several years as a young girl in Washington State. She was raised and received her education in Belleville, Kansas, graduating from Belleville High School in 1953.
Barbara met Albert Chatfield while working as a waitress in Belleville. Albert was a truck driver, stopping for food and it was love at first sight. The couple were united in marriage on January 18, 1953, in Belleville where they made their home for a short time before moving to Wichita, Kansas. Barbara worked at Cessna Aircraft in Wichita as well as at Savute’s Italian Ristorante. She was a fantastic waitress. When the family moved to Gothenburg, Nebraska in 1971, Barbara worked as a waitress at Homestead Cafe, as well as at JM McDonald’s Clothing Store. In 1980, Albert and Barbara moved to Lincoln and Barbara worked for Weight Watchers. Barbara was a committed and loving homemaker and wife.
She was a member of Fourth Presbyterian Church in Lincoln, Nebraska as well as the Order of the Eastern Star which she served as Worthy Matron. Barbara was a marvelous seamstress, making dresses and outfits for her children for all holidays and occasions. She was an avid reader, enjoyed bowling, and a great floral designer.
Her family includes her husband of 71 and a half years, Albert Chatfield of Gothenburg, NE; her-son-in law Jim Ward of Kearney, NE; her daughters, Connie Schaefer and husband, Scott of Winfield, KS; Ruthie Ostergard and husband, Doak of Gothenburg, NE; her sister Colleen “Cam” Muncy of Springfield, OH; her grandchildren, Jeni Wallgren, James Ward, Jared, Jeff, and Kelsi Schaefer, Aaron, Lucas, and Alex Franzen; her great grandchildren, Zach and Brock Wallgren, Jonah and Taytem Coleman, Ava Ward, Linley, Avia, Ellis, Etta, Keely, Bowen, Barrett, and Finley Schaefer, and Jase, Jackson, Piper, and Kennedi Franzen; and her great-great grandchildren, Emberleigh and Rigby Wallgren.
In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by an infant son Robert Chatfield, a son Marty Chatfield, a daughter Teresa “Teri” Ward, brother, Ron Calhoun, sister Jean Gardner, and son-in-law Rod Franzen.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, June 7, 2024, at Fourth Presbyterian Church 5200 Francis Street in Lincoln, Nebraska under the direction of Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery 6700 South 14th Street. A viewing and visitation will be held prior to the church service beginning at 1:00 P.M.
Memorials have been established in Barbara’s name for Prairie Care - The Susie Collins House in Gothenburg, Nebraska, Gentiva Hospice in Winfield, Kansas, and Fourth Presbyterian Church in Lincoln, Nebraska. Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service.
