Martha Ruth was born at home on April 3, 1940, in Guilford County, NC. After graduating from Nathanael Greene High School in 1958, she earned her associate’s degree from King’s Business College in Greensboro, NC. Martha’s attention to detail and love of language served her well in the personnel department of Kayser-Roth (Burlington) for seven years before she turned her energies homeward to raise her children, care for her grandchildren, and laugh with her Harold. Martha rarely sat still, unless she was sitting at the dining room table to update her journal or write one of the thousand letters she sent in her lifetime. She enjoyed using her creative talents in so many ways, among them photography, sewing, painting, singing, cake decorating, and wood crafts. Martha’s faith was very important to her and she was a faithful member of her church, her choir, and her Sunday school class. She volunteered throughout her life in many different forums, including Nathanael Greene Elementary and Meals on Wheels. Martha’s love of travel took her family all over the United States and Harold all the way to Iceland, Germany and Canada; she fulfilled one of her dreams when she visited Paris with her daughter and granddaughters.
The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Martha’s life make a contribution to Coble’s Lutheran Church (5200 Coble Church Road, Julian NC 27283) and/or AuthoraCare Collective Hospice (914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington NC 27215). The family would like to thank those who offered such compassionate care to Martha in these last months of her long struggle with Alzheimer’s.
