Jean was born in Pilot Mountain (Surry County) to the late Vester and Lena Ruth Flinchum who purchased the family farm in Julian in 1942, where she spent the rest of her life and loved it dearly. She retired from Central Carolina Air Conditioning in 2001, then began her mission of helping others in her family and community, both near and far. Her many skills included sewing, knitting, crocheting, embroidery, reading, and best of all her cooking. All who knew her have enjoyed her specially prepared meals, including cakes and pies that she had perfected and delivered to friends and family for special occasions or any time of need.
Jean was a 1954 graduate of Nathanael Greene High School where she served as the communications contact for many years. She was a faithful member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church since 1954 after her marriage, although she supported other community church missions, including the Religious Sisters of Mercy in Michigan where her granddaughter is a Postulant.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband of 54 years, Fred Auman Clapp. She is survived by her two loving daughters, Tammy Fox (Dan), Linda Murray (Mike), four grandchildren, Lindsay Fox, Will Fox (Alexandra), Morgan Murray, and Jameson Murray (Alissa), a wonderful sister, Patricia Shoffner (Terry), and much-loved nieces and nephews. Her proudest family moments were the birth of her daughters and grandchildren. Jean will be remembered by many in her family and extended community for always taking care of others and she will be greatly missed.
