Colonel (USA Retired) Guy Kent Troy, age 100, passed away on Friday, 17 March 2023 at his home near Liberty, NC after a very fulfilling life. Guy was born on 15 March 1923 in Washington D.C. to the parents of Dr. (Lt. Col.) Thaddeus S. Troy and Sarah “Hattie” Williamson Troy. He graduated High School from Missouri Military Academy in 1940. Guy graduated from St. Petersburg Junior College in 1942 and went on to attend the U.S.M.A. at West Point graduating in 1946. He was commissioned a 2LT in Armor with assignment in the Constabulary in Germany.
Upon his return to the United States, Guy was interested in the Modern Pentathlon Olympic Team and was tasked to recruit, train and manage a squad where he earned a spot on the final team. He competed as the team captain on the USA Modern Pentathlon Olympic team for the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki, Finland. He continued his Olympic involvement serving throughout his life culminating as the President of the UIPMB elected honorary member in 1997.
Guy had a distinguished career of 30 years in the Army including service during WWII, Korea, a tour in Iran, a deployment in Vietnam and the highlight being the Defense Attaché in Vienna, Austria. He retired in 1976 as a Colonel and holds numerous awards.
In 1952, Guy married the former Winifred H. Charles of Rahway, NJ and together they raised three children: Pamela C. Sims (Hal), Maj. (USA Retired) G. Kent Troy, Jr. (Ingrid) and Thaddeus W. Troy. After 56 years of marriage, Wynne preceded Guy in death. He is also survived by his four grandchildren: Philip A. Troy (Sarah), Nicholas A. Troy, Nina C. Troy-Brandt (Patrick) and Emma B. Troy and three great granddaughters: Alana I. Clouthier, Amilia F. Clouthier and Attemiriah H. D. Troy.
In retirement Guy became a gentleman farmer and was recognized as the Forest Landowner of the Year in 2003. Guy held such leadership positions to include: President of his West Point Class, the honorary President of the Army Lacrosse Alumni Association and was a member of the Randolph County Honor Guard.
Near and dear to Wynne and Guy’s hearts was the All Souls Anglican Church where the first meeting of this congregation was held in the Great Hall of the Troy Estate which grew to have its own church and flourishes still today.
The family will receive friends for a time of visitation at Loflin Funeral Home, 212 W. Swannanoa Avenue in Liberty, NC from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, 23 March 2023. The funeral service will be held at Bethany United Methodist Church, 6151 Bethany Way, Staley, NC on Friday, 24 March 2023 at 2 p.m. and committal immediately following.
