Greg grew up in the Kansas City area and graduated from Oak Park HIgh School. He went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Southwest Baptist College in Bolivar, Missouri. He met his first wife, Karen, there and they married following his junior year. He served faithfully in the United States Army for 3 years, mostly in Okinawa, Japan. They had two daughters, Missy and Kari. Greg taught high school history for one year and decided it wasn’t what he should do. He moved to Springfield, MO in 1978, where he lived until 2002, when he moved back to Kansas City after his wife’s death. He met and married Donna Noland in November of 2003 and they had 18 wonderful years together serving each other and the Lord.
Greg worked as a Financial Aid Officer for his alma mater for a few years and then for the rest of his working life he worked for evangelical Christian ministries as a Planned Giving Specialist. He did seminars on estate planning and planned giving as well as teaching pastors and other church or non-profit leaders how to best help their donors all over the United States with Moody Bible Institute and other organizations. He changed many lives over his life. He retired from The Baptist Home where he ended his lengthy career doing “Kingdom Work”.
Greg attended Gashland Baptist Church as a young teen and was saved at 12 years of age and baptized there. He served at South Haven Baptist Church in Springfield as an adult teacher, deacon and worked in the nursery with his first wife. After moving to Kansas City and remarrying, he served as a deacon, door greeter, Global Cafe helper, adult teacher and with Donna in the marriage ministry at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. Greg loved the Lord and shared Him in his quiet, kind and humble way till he went to his eternal home.
Greg shared in his testimony to the Re-Engage marriage group that he was blessed to have had two godly wives. Together he had 4 adult children, 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He loved them all as if they were his own flesh and blood. Greg enjoyed traveling, attending Southern Gospel concerts, spending time with family and he loved football and his Royals baseball.
Greg is survived by his beloved wife, Donna Lober of Kansas City, Missouri; his daughters Missy (Dan) Basnett, Taichung, Taiwan; Kari (Marlen) McCoy, Kansas City, Missouri; step-son Jeff (Angie) Noland, Agency, Missouri; step-daughter, Jennifer Martin, Kansas City, Missouri; grandchildren Dalton (Emilee) Basnett; Gracen Basnett; Miles and Karli McCoy; Jeremy (Jessica) Noland, Jarett Noland, Ashley Blair, Hannah (Travis) Miller-Schmidt, Elizabeth Martin and Mitchell Martin; great-grandchildren Meric, Calvin, Carter, Lilly, Luke, Rylee, Rayna, Remi, Maddox and Harper and his sister Sandy Rix, Raymore, Missouri. A private family burial will be in Bolivar, Missouri sometime in May of next year.
Greg is remembered as a loving, caring, and humble servant to all he encountered. He always had a smile with a little humor thrown in once in a while. He will be greatly missed by many as he celebrates his new life with his Jesus.
A celebration of life service will be held on January 8th, in the Chapel at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, 1600 Route 291, Liberty, Missouri. Visitation will begin at 10 am with the service to follow at 11 am.
