LEXINGTON - William Edward “Bill” Stilwell, Jr. died Monday, May 11, 2015. Born November 17, 1944 in Statesville NC, he was the son of the late Hazel Green and William Edward Stilwell, Sr. A graduate of Brooklyn Cayce High School, he received a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Master’s degree in Business Administration both from the University of South Carolina. A lifelong Gamecock fan, he was a member of the Gamecock Club and Lifetime Silver Spur. He was a member of the USC Engineering Partnership Board and a Registered Professional Engineer.
In 1966 he married Susan Cleckler Stilwell who survives. He served in the SC Air National Guard and began his career as an engineer at the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control where he was Bureau Chief of a number of programs including waste and water management. He retired as President of Laidlaw Environmental Services in 1994. Retirement was short lived as he started his own business developing residential properties, retiring again in 2014.
A member of Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church for over 60 years, he served for many years on the Church Council and was longtime chairman of the Finance Committee. Active in his community, Bill was a member of the Lexington Country Club, served six years as chairman and was an avid golfer. He pitched fast pitch softball for over thirty years and was charter President of Lexington Optimist Club. For over 19 years and until his death, he was on the Board of Directors of Lexington Medical Center serving as chair of various committees, Vice Chairman and for six years, Chairman of the Board. He was also on the Lexington Medical Center Foundation and was the first recipient of the Stilwell Award, which honors individuals in this area for philanthropic endeavors. Of all his accomplishments, he was most proud of being "Papa" to his four grandchildren!
In addition to his wife, he is also survived by two sons, Todd Stilwell and Wes Stilwell (Marti), one brother, The Reverend Dr. Ralph Stilwell (Barbara), those special grandchildren, Cole, Samantha, Ella and Liam Stilwell, Krista Stilwell and two very special cousins, Bob Wasson and Sarah Cooper. The service will be held at Mount Tabor Lutheran Church, 1000 B Avenue, West Columbia, SC at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 13, 2015. Visitation will be held at Caughman Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel on Tuesday, May 12, 2005, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. There will be a private burial. Memorials may be made to Mount Tabor Lutheran Church, New Life Center Building Fund.
