Michael Edward Hughes

Mr. Hughes was a member of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Linda Hughes of Lexington; daughter, McKenna Hughes Bare (David) of Lexington; son, Kevin Hughes (Kelly) of Lexington; grandchildren, Nyla, Joe, Connor and Hayden; brothers, Tim Hughes (Colleen) and Joe Hughes (Kathy); sisters, Patti Mitchell (Pete) and Barb Smilnak; numerous nieces and nephews and beloved dog, Brodie. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Tom Smilnak.

Coach Hughes taught science at Brookland-Cayce High School for more than thirty years and coached softball, basketball, and football in the athletic program. He also served as advisor for The Bearcat yearbook and the annual Miss Bearcat pageant. His legacy remains in many of his extraordinary photographs of student life throughout the buildings on campus.

Post-retirement, he enjoyed being an adored “Pap Pap” to his four grandchildren, perfecting his photography craft, and bird watching. This second act of his life is beautifully captured in a veritable trove of photographs that he created for his family to forever treasure.

Memorial services will be held at 12:00 pm on Thursday, April 6, 2023 at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be private.
