She was born in Wilmington, NC on November 25, 1935, the daughter of Ollie Pope Whitman and Perry Whitman, Sr. Joyce was the wife of Robert “Bob” Bowers, Sr. They were married on May 2, 1954. Joyce and Bob had 70 years of marriage, raising a family, traveling, camping, and family reunions in Lexington, NC, Wilmington, NC, and Alabama.
Joyce was active in her church and she loved boating, fishing, and exploring the intercostal waterways with her brother. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother, “Nana.” Friends and family were always welcome in their home and their lives together. She never met a stranger and hated to miss out on anything interesting or fun.
Her enthusiasm, beauty, and youthfulness made you want to meet her and spend time playing at whatever card or board game. She knew how to have a good time.
Along with her parents, she joins in heaven all of her siblings: Muriel Kelly (Milton), Betty Riday (Joe), Marie Wardenfelt (Steve), Perry “Buddy” Whitman (Sandra), as well as aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and all her loving ancestors.
Surviving are her three children: Deborah Wyatt (Doug), Robert Bowers, Jr. (Patsy), and Cindy Bostic (Mark); five grandchildren: Michael Wyatt (Katie), Nicholas Wyatt (Jessie), Matthew Bostic (Kensey), Meagan Bostic, and Bryan Clontz (Eury); and two great-grandchildren: Eleanor Wyatt and Harper Bostic.
The family thanks all of the physicians and support staff in our community.
A service will be held on June 19, 2024 at 11:00 AM at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, 400 River Road, Columbia, SC. The family will see friends from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the church.
