Walter Joseph Scott Jr., age 87, of Levittown, PA passed away peacefully at home while surrounded by loved ones on Monday, June 19, 2023. It was certainly a life well lived, as he always kept busy doing the things he enjoyed the most.
Born in Philadelphia, he was the 2nd son of the late Bertha (Fox) and Walter J. Scott Sr. He moved to Levittown in 1965 where he has resided ever since.
Walter was preceded in death by his three brothers, Harry Scott, Charlie Scott, and William Scott.
Walter is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Scott (Gartner), his three children; Walter Scott III (Maura), Ann Marie Smith (Joseph) and Barbara Bennett (David). He leaves behind seven grandchildren: Walter and William Scott, Lauren and Joseph Smith, and Nicholas, Stephanie and Daniel Bennett. He is also survived by his three brothers; Andy Scott, Joseph Scott, and Paul Scott, and one sister, Joyce Herzog.
Walter proudly served his country as an Army Specialist T-4. He was stationed at Fort Huachuca, Arizona.
He was employed by Acme markets for 36 years as a Produce Manager. He worked at various locations, and especially enjoyed his role developing friendships with his fellow employees as well as the regular customers. He was an expert regarding fruits and vegetables and could always be trusted to pick the best watermelons and cantaloupes.
Walter had a lifelong passion for gardening and caring for the trees and flowers that adorn his home. He had the most amazing green thumb. Neighbors would regularly see Walt working around the yard, in his garden and flower beds or reloading the bird feeders.
After retiring from Acme Markets, he did not intend to sit around so he took a part time job at Manheim Auto Auction in Bordentown, NJ, working one day a week driving cars through the line to be auctioned off. He did this for 23 years and enjoyed just keeping occupied and meeting people.
Walt was an avid follower of the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles sports teams. He especially enjoyed watching the Phillies games with his wife by his side while snacking on pretzels, peanuts, hard candies, or ice cream.
In retirement, he and Mary enjoyed their weekly pinochle matches with their group of friends, playing at the parkway senior center in Fallsington, PA. They also went on many trips to various casinos with their group of retirees from the Acme.
You could usually find Walt on the patio or front porch enjoying a good cigar or his pipe after dinner and at summer cookouts with family. He was an outdoorsman who also loved to go fishing down the shore on his son-in-law's boat. They had many good times and told quite a few fishing stories over the years.
Everyone who knew him knows the wonderful sense of humor he possessed. A master of the one-liner and wisecracks, he was usually surrounded by laughter. He was a true joy to be around.
Walter has left quite a legacy and will be missed by all who knew him.
A visitation for family and friends will be held Thursday, July 6, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Queen of the Universe Church in Levittown, PA followed by a Catholic mass at 12:00 PM. The burial will occur Thursday, July 6, 2023 at 2:00 PM at the Washington Crossing National Cemetery.
