The Reverend Stanley A. Powell, Jr., former rector of Saint Paul's Episcopal Church in Levittown died on Thursday, October 20, 2011 at Twining Village Nursing Home, Holland. His wife, Eunice predeceased him in 2003. He is survived by his sister Christine Anderson and her family and many nieces and nephews. Father Powell began his ministry in Bucks County as rector of Christ Church, Eddington and vicar of Saint Paul's Edgely in 1949 at a time when the area was largely a farming region. When Levittown began to be developed he relinquished his work in Eddington to meet the full time needs of the new community. Saint Paul's Church in Edgely was moved to Levittown. He was instrumental in founding and establishing the first church to be completed in Levittown. He served the congregation for 38 years before his retirement in 1988. He served as chaplain ministering to retired and distressed clergy families of the diocese for six years. He continued in the active ministry by providing interim and on-call support. Since his retirement, he has served as a supply priest at the Church of the Redeemer in Andalusia for the past six years. In the past, he has been active in the Brotherhood of Saint Andrew as well as working in a procedure for problem solving in Parish life and the helping to develop the democratic process in the Diocese of Philadelphia. Stan Powell was a graduate of Lower Merion High School in 1939. He was graduated from the University of Virginia in 1943. He served in the Navy during World War II in the invasion of southern France and the Battle of Okinawa. He studied at the Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, was graduated in 1949. He was ordained to the Diaconate in May and the Priesthood in November. He has been active in the ministry for 61 years.
