Joan was born in Philadelphia and raised in Croydon, Bucks County, where she graduated second in her class from Delhaas High School. Joan then attended Millersville University where she met her future husband, Gary L. Bowman, and also received her teaching degree. After graduation, Joan taught math in the Bristol Township School District.
In June of 1964, Joan and Gary married. She was the loving mother of Warren David Bowman, Jason Bowman (Denise), and Gary L. Bowman II (deceased). Joan and Gary moved to the Langhorne area in 1964 where they raised their children. After raising her family, Joan became the children’s librarian at the Bensalem Branch of the Bucks County Free Library System where she worked for 20 years. In 1990, Joan obtained her Master’s Degree in Library Science from Drexel University.
Throughout her adult life, Joan remained active in her community and committed to helping others. She was an active member of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Feasterville, where she also served on the board of directors. Joan also served on the boards of the Bucks County YWCA, The Bucks County Library Board and the Board of the Lower Southampton Library.
Joan also was very involved with the League of Women Voters, the Langhorne Women's Club as well as various book clubs. Joan’s most favorite volunteer work was visiting with patients at St. Mary Medical Center and reading to children in schools.
Joan’s life revolved around her family. She also loved animals, music, and reading.
In addition to being the beloved wife of 57 years to her husband, Gary, and mother to Jason, Warren, and Gary, Joan was the devoted grandmother of Jackson, Ryan, Nicholas and Zachary. She will also be sadly missed by her sisters-in-law, several nieces and nephews, and her many friends.
Joan was predeceased by her siblings, Bruce Hamilton and Carmen Scisly.
Family and friends are invited to call on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 from 6:00 until 9:00 pm at the James J. Dougherty Funeral Home, Inc., 2200 Trenton Road, Levittown. Friends and family may also call on Wednesday, December 22, 2021, from 10:00 until 11:00 am, at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, 65 E. Street Road, Feasterville-Trevose, PA, where her funeral service will be held at 11:00 am. Interment will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lower Southampton Library or the Women’s Animal Center in Bensalem, PA.
