Elizabeth "Betty Jane" Sexton passed away peacefully on May 19, 2023, surrounded by her family and overwhelming love. She was 84 years young and as beautiful on the inside as she was on the outside.
Betty Jane grew up on Akron Street in the Frankford Section of Philadelphia. She was one of six children born to Betty (Tiernan) and Joe Discher. Betty attended St. Martin of Tours and Frankford High School. She spent many hours dancing with her sisters and friends to the sounds of the '50s. A big highlight for all was watching Betty, Marie and Joanie doing the jitterbug.
At 15 years old, Betty met the love of her life, Tommy, and neither one ever looked back. They married at 19 years old and started a family of their own. They raised four young children on Tampa Street, teaching their kids the importance of friendship and family and commitment while actively volunteering their time running snack stands, carnivals, coaching cheerleading and coaching baseball at the Tabor Rams Youth Organization.
As their family grew, Betty and Tom moved to Highland Park in Levittown and continued their love story. Many weekends were spent at their mountain home on the lake at the Goose Hill Lodge. All were welcome in their home, especially on Christmas Eve, where tinseling the tree was a must! Betty Jane was a real life Santa with her generosity and jolly soul. Nothing made her happier than being surrounded by her family.
Betty Jane had several jobs throughout her life. She worked at Sears on the Boulevard with her sister Marie, followed by some time spent at AMACO Container Bottling Company where Betty, Marie, and Dottie surely left their mark! Betty's favorite job was working as a cafeteria aide for many years at Carl Sandburg Middle School, where she was lovingly known as "Aunt Betty" to all the kids.
Betty Jane lived a beautiful life, traveling this earth with her lifelong friends, having lots of laughs and making unforgettable memories along the way. The kindness in her heart was unmatched and she was loved by all.
Betty Jane is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas J. Sexton; her parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Discher; her brothers Joe Discher, Jerry Discher, and Jack Discher; and her sister Marie Spain (Bill). She is also preceded in death by her granddaughter, Irene Sexton.
Betty Jane is survived by her four children: Thomas Sexton, Daniel Sexton (Michele), Beth Mealey (Bryan), and Jack Sexton (Trish). She is also survived by her loving grandchildren, Brian Curcio (Carrie), Amber Mullen (Sean), Danielle Mealey, Timothy Mealey, Mia Sexton, Gina Sexton, Eric Sexton, Jack Sexton; great grandchildren Eliana Mealey, Murphy Mullen and Hazel Mullen; her loving sister Dottie Lees (Mickey), sisters-in-law Jane McIntyre, Ann Discher, Mary Jane Discher, and Toni Discher.
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, from 3 pm until 4:30 pm at the James J. Dougherty Funeral Home, 2200 Trenton Road, Levittown, PA. Funeral Service will follow at 4:30 pm.
