Shirley Hendrix Grimes

Mrs. Grimes was born on November 4, 1935 in McDowell County, WV to the late Glenn Hendrix and Mildred Jones Hendrix. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Grimes, two sisters. Laura “Lady” Perkins, Annie ”Chunk” Mitchell, three brothers, Leon Hendrix, Otto Hendrix and Kermit Hendrix.

Shirley was a member of the Bushtown Mennonite Brethren Church and The Life Center in Lenoir, NC and was a loving and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. Sister Goodie was the Head Prayer Warrior and also acted as the official “Mother of the Church.” She belonged to the Missionary Club and had a hand in and supported all auxiliary organizations and committees of the church.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Darryl A. Perkins and wife Marva Lynne of Rural Hall, two nephews, Dr. Vaughn Hendrix and wife Marian of Charlotte, Gary Hendrix and wife Jan of Chicago, and a niece, Iris Haynes of Charlotte.

Also left to cherish her memory are nine grandchildren: Roderick Ferguson of Lenoir, Dr. Suzanne Smith of Durham, Jonathan Bowers and wife Heather of Chapel Hill, Adrianna Ferguson of Morrisville, Steven Pleasant of Honolulu HI, Tarlisa Pleasant of Orlando FL, Maisha Cherry-Wells of Houston TX, Trier Wells of Greensboro, Tatianna Flowers of Rural Hall, NC, and host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces, great nephews and extended family members.

A graveside service to honor Mrs. Grimes will be held on Wednesday, April 29, 2020 at 12:00 pm at Blue Ridge Memorial Park in Lenoir. The family will not be receiving friends due to the covid-19 pandemic, but invite any who wish to view Mrs. Grimes to come by Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 28, 2020 between the hours of 1:00 pm and 5:00 pm where they will have the opportunity to view.

Serving as pallbearers will be George Anthony Isbell, Ray Hunt, Mike Hodge, Torress Baker, Sam Dula, Michael Isbell, Michael Simon and Anthony Horton.
