Mrs. Phipps was born in Avery County to the late Theodore Crump and Cansada Coffey Crump. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, Jack Philyaw and her second husband Lee Phipps; a daughter, Patricia Poarch; a grandson, Brian Philyaw; a great grandson Hunter Philyaw; brothers, Carl Crump and Spence Crump and sisters, Minnie Bowen, Kate Jolly, Louise Philyaw, Edna Whisnant, and Annie Lee Whisnant.
She was retired from Caldwell County School System and was a member of Worship Point Baptist Church. She enjoyed canning, loved gardening and could grow anything. She loved Pigeon Forge and loved her canine companion Ginger.
Those left to cherish her memory are her sons, Jesse Philyaw (Cindy) of Lenoir, Jerry Philyaw (Mona) of Lenoir and Richard Drum (Glenda) of Newton; her daughters, Thelma Coffey of Lenoir, Sue McJunkin (Dale) of Hudson and Kathy Drye (Aaron) of Sawmills; 16 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Sunday, June 30, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in Pendry’s Chapel with Reverend Jerry Lingerfelt officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home Saturday, June 29, 2013 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.
Serving as pallbearers will be Terry Barnes, David Philyaw, Raymond Lovins, Steven Lovins, Dale McJunkin, Jr. and Jonathan Philyaw. Honorary pallbearers will be Roy Whisnant, Johnny Duncan, Josh Lovins, Jonathan Kirby, Devin Barnes, and Jarrett Barnes.
The family requests that memorials be made to Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood Street, Lenoir, NC 28645.
